Hope everyone had a good Easter weekend! I spent most of it working on an art project of mine, working on a high-poly model for Kaiyra’s starship. It’s been a labor of love thus far, and the damn thing is well over 9 million polys now so it’s taxing the hell out of my rather weak/dying computer (but dammit, Max 2012 handles it wonderfully). Up until this weekend, most of the work was creating the ship’s overall look and silhouette and constantly revising it using FFD modifiers in 3ds Max. This step is something I don’t normally do, and it’s absolutely become a permanent step in my own process now—it’s so ridiculously powerful and really lets you nail the intended aesthetics, especially as you add new details and realize the silhouette is falling apart because of it.

Here’s a little peek of where she’s at so far…keeping in mind she’s had just a first rough pass on greebles in her wing-things and the port/starboard engines (which are almost half of the 9 million polys right now):

I have a little bit more of the body work to do on here, cutting out a few things like spots for landing gear and the galley ramp, but really the next big step will be collapsing my stacks and working on the hull panels. I’m excited for that, big dreading it at the same time—it’s going to be a pain in the ass.

Anyhow, all I’ve got for tonight. G’night!

I ran across a website a couple of days ago–I believe linked through a news post of one of my daily-read websites. Anyway, it’s called Concept Ships and it is quite literally a blog posting concept art for starships.

Took me a long time to go through all of it! It’s amazing to see some of the great ideas these artists have had for these designs…a nice touch is the inclusion of a well-known artist, like Ralph McQuarrie, and looking at their art in the same viewing as an upcoming artist.

Soooo…if you like sci-fi or just art in general, it’s definitely worth a visit.
