Deuce

Two days of pics…the madness!  Stayed up way too late after the kids went down to work on Kaiyra’s model, finished up her body (minus the hands) and her head (minus the ears).  The head will need a little more repositioning later on in ZBrush, but overall I’m really pleased.

Here’s a couple of renders…mind you only the eyes are textured, so it’ll look weird.  Of course, any human without hands or ears is going to look mighty peculiar too:

Ol’ q-ball here has quite a ways to go…she has no eyelashes, the missing ears (coming tomorrow), no eyebrows and no hair.  I’ll likely get some of those details in tomorrow night, and then I’ll setup a sub-surface scattering shader on her for her skin.  A what-youareadick-who?  SSS for short, it’s basically how light works on skin.  Ever hold your hand up to a flashlight or light bulb, and see how it makes your skin glow?  That’s light entering your skin, bouncing — or scattering in the sub-surface of your skin — off of the bone and muscle and then coming back out again.  It’s one of the ways a CG model can look completely and totally fake to you, because know it or not your subconcious mind is aware of this…which is why to you it’ll just seem fake.  Same reason a CG dinosaur looks real on screen but a CG cat won’t — your mind already knows how a cat should move, but you’ve never seen a dinosaur running around so you won’t notice it as much.

If I fried your brain, sorry!  If not, kudos to you.  Short post tonight, I need me some sleep!  G’night!
