Well…really more like “seize the knowledge,” but I haven’t a damn clue how to say that and I’m far too lazy this close to 2am to try looking it up. Carpe knowledgeumisis…ellium. There.
I’ve long been the self-taught kind of person, typically once I learn something I know it well and I’m happy to seek out answers to questions I have. I’d say about 95% of everything I know about 3d modeling, animation, CG work, and art in general has been self taught. While I’m proud of the accomplishment, I guess, I certainly don’t mean to make it sound like I claim genius or superiority in that way. I just wanted to know stuff and knew no one else that knew it, so I took it on myself. Here and there along the way I met some great tutors that more or less opened doors for me that I had never conceived opening.
Not bragging, there’s a point to this.
So know as an almost 4 year veteran of the video game industry with this mountain of knowledge I’ve gone through a lot to learn, practice and constantly try to improve — I see I’ve never taken that approach outside of this trench I seem to be in. It’s only ever been for film or art/game development. It’s confusing to come to this conclusion, but it truly is there.
For example, I have always wanted to learn how to make prop replicas. Sculpt, say, a Star Wars character’s armor or helmet or weapon and make a cast of it, maybe crank out a few copies for friends as gifts or sell to pay for the supplies. I’ve always wanted to learn how to make music…playing the guitar would be pretty awesome, I’d settle for that. I’ve tried my hand at sewing a couple of times and done well with it but never followed that up.
It’s just weird, I can’t seem to figure out why it is I can go gung-ho to learning about one field and yet stand there hoping some mystical finger will reach down and flick me in the head and I’ll suddenly know it all — which would sure as hell be awesome — for other things I’m at least semi-passionate about learning.
I’m fixin’ to change that, though I’m not certain enough about it to actually say I’m doing it yet. I asked a friend of mine today if he knew of any prop building or cast making classes and he gave be some great leads and links to videos I can purchase and that was one fantastic start right there.
And on a side note…if you haven’t checked out Mumford & Sons yet — I command thee!
G’night folks!
