Yep, still alive. Took a couple of weeks for internet to get turned on out here, but I’m all setup in the new apartment which is about 15 minutes from downtown Austin and things are good.
Red Fly Studio is an amazing place to work, usually you start to get a real feel for a place after you’re there a couple of weeks and the “newness” wears off and even with that fading I’m still finding how much I like it. It’s definitely a bit of an adjustment being around so many developers (I think the studio’s around 60’ish people?), though I find I like it quite a bit. The opinion I had been given by others that large studios are assmbly factories couldn’t be farther from the truth – tasks are broken down with the best people on each part of the job, giving everything an immense amount of attention and lovin’ to get it where it needs to be.
I work on Ghostbusters right now as an FX Artist, not really sure what I’m allowed to say past that I do that. It’s a bit of a mind trip to realize every day I’m making a Ghostbusters game, this is the movie that terrorized me for years as a kid (long story) and I remember obsessing over GB2’s Nintendo game. Never thought I’d be working on the franchise’s first forray into the 3D realm of systems!
This week I’m making a real effort to shift my schedule towards something closer to what I’ll be doing for the long haul…get to work early in the morning, come home early afternoon. I like being able to spend the time with my kids in the afternoon and putting them to bed, so I’d like the opinion of my co-workers of my work schedule be that I’m one of the morning people (of which there are many, so I don’t need to worry about anyone being bitter that I don’t stay late at night like them) which is really cool…the attitude is put your time in however you want, just get the work done and do it well. It’s nice.
Austin’s a great place, a lot more humid than I thought it would be but my body is adjusting to it now (I think full acclimitization is 30 days for most people, if memory serves). Working downtown is very cool, it somehow manages to keep this small-town feel to it while being a large downtown area. At night, every night of the week, there is live music blaring along 6th street. Just awesome.
About all I have for now though, trying to get to bed at a reasonable time now! I’ll try posting more later tomorrow.
