Moving to Austin

A week, to the day, after I started putting in applications to studios and I have myself a job!  I feel like it’s a little early in the process to start boasting where I am just yet, so while I apologize for being Mister Mysterio here I’d prefer to keep where to myself until I actually set my foot into the building there.

I can say it’s in Austin, Texas…live music capital of the world!  The cost of living is actually cheaper there than it is in Appleton, Wisconsin (where I currently am), which is even cheaper than Green Bay (where I used to work).

When I started applying places, I had a “top three” in the country as to where I wanted to work…two of them were in Austin, another was in Arizona.  I’m still in a bit of a daze that I was fortunate enough to land a job out of my top three, and while I think the standard pre-job jitters of “I hope I can live up to expectations” there are dancing around in my stomach I know I’m going tof it right in there.

It’ll be very cool to work on AAA games, where I can tell my friends to go pick up a copy at a store now!  With two XBOX Live Arcade titles under my belt, I actually don’t know anyone that has the system or – in the two cases of people owning them – they don’t download games.  Bah, I say!

The relocation is going to be very sudden though, which Kelly’s been amazing with and helps build my confidence that we can pull the whole thing off.  I’ll be driving out there in a week (I start on the 9th of June), and I’m already working with a realty agent to get myself a small studio or one bedroom.  Kelly and the kids will follow suit out there in a couple of months and we’ll upgrade to something a little larger at that time.

Very exciting!
